Is it time to upgrade from DSL to T1 Service?

Written by: QuoteMyT1 Staff - Dec 1, 2008

Should you be upgrading your DSL to a T1 connection to the Internet? People are often confused when an upgrade of DSL service is considered. One must consider several factors when analyzing your current DSL connection and whether it should be replaced. For many, a factor to be considered is the reliability of the DSL connection. If reliability of the applications run are critical to your operation, serious consideration should be made to upgrading the DSL to a T1 connection. Though DSL can provide a cost effective and quick means of obtaining a high-speed connection to the Internet, it is not intended to support large numbers of users in a commercial environment as is a T1 connection.

When employees and, more importantly, your customers are dependent on your Internet connection, reliability becomes very critical. If your Internet connection is used by your customers to access your database or server, then the reliability of your connection is most critical. Your employees consider the Internet connection critical as they connect to the email server or use ASP products. It is really a lifeline for your business. With no reliable lifeline, will your business thrive? Will it grow? Will it survive? Will any monthly savings of a sub-par connection make up for the loss of employee productivity or customer loss when DSL connections are down or bogged down? Critical connections should be carried on T1s. Nothing less will do.

Many smaller businesses are extremely sensitive to pricing and cannot afford the cost of a T-1. T1s can cost many times the price of a DSL connection. As residential customers generally are most price sensitive, they should not consider T1 circuits unless there is an overwhelming business reason or there is a technical reason that a DSL will not work.

A lot of people do not realize that a DSL or cable Internet connection can be just as fast or faster than a T1. A problem with DSL is that, in most cases, it is oversubscribed. Oversubscription is when a fixed amount of available bandwidth is shared by several customers where more bandwidth is committed to the combined customers than is available. If one customers is a heavy user, they can use a high amount of the bandwidth and other users suffer. Business DSL is a higher priority than residential DSL, but can still be oversubscribed.

If price is the most critical factor, DSL may be OK for your application. However, if reliability of your Internet connection is paramount, you may be well advised to order your dedicated T1 today.
